Semantics becoming reputable Computer Science?

by Frank

In a recent msg to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Web Semantics,
Elsevier wrote:

The Journal of Web Semantics was recently added to the list of journals indexed by Thomson Reuters (formerly Thomson Scientific and before that ISI). This is an important accomplishment in itself, since Thomson is highly regarded and selective in what journals it includes. Thompson just published their 2007 Journal Citation Report and our impact factor is given as 3.41, which is the third highest out of the 92 titles in its category — Computer Science, Information systems.

There was some speculation in emails between the board members on how to read this. The good news definitely is that such a high impact could only be achieved by getting cited by people outside the immediate Semantic Web community. That would be an indication that Semantic Web research and results are being seen as relevant and interesting by the broader CS community.
